Default Is it time to seperate Antiques and Collectables?

    Hallo Everybody

In recent times I have noted numerous pieces of jewellery, pens, paintings and prints, etc. all listed under the antiques/collectables category.

This Wednesday auction starts off looking like a jewellery box.

The argument of whether the item belongs in the category or not will remain a contentious issue as we all have our own opinions and views.

Perhaps Bid or Buy can now split Antiques from Collectables and an opinion on Antiques will be for example; items that are antique and 100 years and older or rare items that are antiques because of it's uniqueness etc. The seller would obviously have to specify in the listing why it's an antique.

    Your thoughts.

    Regards

i think that is a great idea. gosh there is a jewelery section. shall i start listing all my old 78's on antiques and collectables. this section on wednesday really is starting to look a bit shoddy. i also list some jewellery and the odd painting there now as no one complains and nobody seems to care. books has a section for antiques, toys have a section for antiques, i do not know about jewellery section. but who cares, you report till you blue in the face and nothing happens.

Yes!! seperating the collectables and antiques would make space in the antique column for sub catergories in the
individual columns like antique jewellery, toys, antique textiles i.e.antique clothes and then the collectable old jewellery, collectable dolls etc.
Why must these items be under clothes, toys, jewellery with all the modern items??
Do we list old camera's under modern photography??? etc.etc.

    Default Difference of opinion

    Hi All,

I am on the fence with this one.

In some cases i agree that the wednesday auction attracts alot of mediocre, lower quality items that are neither antique nor collectable in some cases. However with regards to jewellery & toys which i sell alot of, if they are quality pieces with a good deal of age to them they'll appeal both to antique collectors & toy/jewellery collectors which is why bob gives you the opportunity of listing it in a second promotional category...

    Regards
    Caroline

Why should a vintage china plate be in the antique or collectable column if a vintage doll can't in this category. The same goes for old jewellery ,vintage clothes etc.
Imagine listing vintage plates in the household (kitchen) category then having a sub category for vintage china.
This is exactly what is happening, especially with vintage clothing, jewellery and toys.
I can't see the logic in it.
Recently a vintage doll listed on the Wed crazy under vintage toys sold for a mere R11. It was not in a second promotional catgory so was not seen by collectors.
I was going to bid on it but unfortunately had a long phone call and missed it.
Poor dolly was worth more than R11

A differance between what? Clarify yourself or do you mean "you" are antique but not collectable in jest?

Where shall we list alloway? Under toys and hobbies sub category "Vintage toys"--Action men.
Rose wont be paying anything since alloway will not be seen by collectors

Youre exactly right Pam (Geewizz). Better chance of the item reaching its value if its seen by antique collectors aswell as specific toy/jewellery collectors.

Definitely put alloway in the section of "action men" but not sure about the antiques though. Perhaps he is a collectible so we could list him there?

    Default Antiques and collectables

Not easy to decide whether antique, collectible or vintage for that matter ? Something could be antique but very ugly and not even for R1.00 would i buy it. Antiques are extremely difficult to catagorise. I feel antiques should be valued by a specialist before being listed. Collectables are definitely your choice - to like or not. Vintage is very deceiving because i am sure half the stuff i am using in my home would be under the vintage catagory !!! So i think whoever is trying to reorganise these three cats. are going to be in for a very difficult decision making time ! Good luck to you !! kitsykatsy
