Personal Background:
I have a limited experience as a fine art buyer and seller.
Attended auctions , bought well and sold well.
Had acquired in the past 5 years ORIGINAL works from:
Irma Stern(2), Pierneef(1),Boonzaier(19), Clearhout (4) Kobeli (1)
van der Westhuisen (1) Boyle (1) and to many other international artists
but the most Prominent Picasso (1) and Aggenbach Pre-1890(1)(dutch master).

Hence I can share experiences and a bit of Knowledge I have. It is an effort to help and to Promote art... But no direct advertising of your own work please.

I plan on putting up my some of my dads paintings for auction, mainly oils on canvas and am not sure about what shipping methods to use, do you have any ideas

As for paintings and the shipping thereof...
I could really recommend Sun Couriers. You can pack it , crate it and the nice part is they collect at your door and deliver to door.
For R85-00, no not a typing error R85-00 and you can send 2 or 3 items to the same address included..

What are the sizing restrictions as the larges painting is 3m x 3m

yip its big, stretched canvas on wood frame

I do recommend ..
You sell it as Pre-Stretched and roll it up and then send it.
Your shipping would be a killer on a good price you might get for the painting..
And scares off a buyer like me who prefer a statement like a big oil painting..
I recommend you give it some thought, the size rolled and stretched on a frame, Call around for some quotes and notice the difference..
I think you might follow my advice..

Hi Banker, I've started listing my own photographic prints for sale and was wondering whether my using the post office's ordinary mail service is an ok choice. I only currently ship with the post office and speed services so have no experience in using couriers (the task seems a bit intimidating to one who's not used courier before).

I was thinking using ordinary mail would save the buyer money. But I have no idea what the price would be for flat-ish packages (with cardboard for protection of course) from A4 to A2 sized. Any idea?

I can enquire at the post office but I was just hoping someone here would know?

And also IF I were to use ordinary post office service would cardboard protection for a print be enough or would they risk being bent?

OR should I ship with the photographs rolled up and shipped in roll containers? (I just don't know if photographs should be rolled up..., don't exactly present well when unrolled)

If they are just paper you can roll them up and put then in a cardboard tube.
Less likely to get damaged, may also be cheaper

But they are 250grams, quite thick, therefore when they roll up they set horribly and need to be re-bent to get them flat. Don't know if that's desirable. I think this is an issue I will have to take up with my fine arts printer, they will probably know how best to maintain and ship such prints...

Is the high gram paper needed as if the person is going to mount it a lower gram should still work as long as the papers texture is fine.

Or maybe not rolling it so tight as I have seen rather fat tubes.

Well that is the grammage offered by the fine arts printers I go to and the high grammage contributes to the best possible quality print. They are not like your generic home photo printer type quality but fine arts quality of the highest standard. I won't lower the standard of my art by using just any type of printing

But regarding rolling or not rolling I will ask them for clarification. Thanks though!

I would also ask them about using another paper that can be rolled but without loosing quality, maybe a high gloss etc.

They are high gloss, epson premium high gloss 250grams. I don't think whether you should roll it up depends on the gloss or paper type but I will ask them.

Southerns covered about all the possibilities.
If there is a Post Net close by go to them and take a sample with you
and get advice. They are helpfully and will steer you in the right direction.
you can use cardboard for a "sandwich ,but be sure that you use a double type, they don't bend.usually that will fit into (A4) an overnight speed services bag..
But try the best options and you might even consider using a Masonite (hardboard) backing, light enough but very strong.

Also remember to put some sort of soft paper between the board and your picture to prevent scratches, say like tissue paper (Like the one in some photo albums)

Thanks Shane, I was even thinking hard board, polystyrene and tissue paper, but will have to go supply hunting to see where I can get cheap sheets of polystyrene...
