    Default Banknote Image Announcement

    Hi All

As per the Reserve Bank, all RSA notes (images) must adhere to the requirements of the Act.

Please kindly start loading your images with the following text on them - Image Only Not Legal Tender. We have put together a tutorial here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LT3_zaSgC6w to show you how to do this.

Please remember to go over the listing policy here - South African Coins and Notes Selling and Buying Policy

    Thank you

Sorry for the hijack but this has to do with banknote images.

I believe that Mr Mandela's face will grace our bank notes from now on. Is this a good or bad idea knowing that people are holding back the R5.00 Mandela coins? Will people start holding onto the new notes now too?

In my humble opinion there is no sense in doing this. For somebody that is not selling full-time on BOB, it is going to be time-consuming! I am not even so sure that it is appliccable to BOB. Maybe an opinion from a advocate can shed light on the legality and appliccability therof. Can somebody explain the logic behind this. Is anybody going to print out and cut out a 1970 R1 note and try to buy with it? Or a 2012 Mandela R10 note? The implication is that 90% of coins and notes on BOB is presently illegal or not according to the Act. Will foreign coins have to be dealt with in similar matter acording to the (similar?) Acts of foreign countries? I deem this Article in the Reserve Bank Act poor policy making and overregulating - even fearfulness. This is what happens when a country hand over their sovereignity to a private institution!

Hi, yes, as sad as it may seem, there are people that will print out those old notes and try to buy something with it. And, yes, there are actually people that will accept it as currency, thinking it is real money.

A poor reflection of society, but we live in a world where people rape children because they think it will cure them of AIDS.

Technically it boils down to copyright. The SARB holds copyright. Just like other companies and institiutions hold copyright over other text and imgaes, so does the SARB. This is covered in the act and no image or recreation may be made without consent of the SARB or without the necessary "watermarking" across the face. It is only applicable to notes as advised by the SARB. Please see details here - South African Coins and Notes Selling and Buying Policy
