Oi, I so envy you CCG - maybe still a few years where we can get to that stage in life (being our own bosses and all), but its our fault for having such a large family. As Confucious may have said "couple who have 7 children have thrice 7 poor years!" Only upside has been they kept us (sort of) young and open-minded, lol. Oh Heaven! I'm FREE!! At last. We sent them all a message - "don't worry about us if you don't see us for the next few years, don't look for us because you won't find us, and don't bug us for money because for the next few years we'll be spending it on ourselves."
I hope all goes well with you and hubbies venture - you deserve it. I hope he's going to tell his boss off in a very "colourful" manner - hehe, I cannot wait for when hubby gets to tell his that he's leaving. It's so frustrating this last waiting period!

@ B&B:
We are planning on raising a toast to the boss at the Christmas party to thank him for the past 7 years, but January will be his last month. I can't wait to see the boss' face plus his stingy wife! She is supposed to be at the office doing admin and switchboard every single day, but only comes in when she feels like it - usually only for about an hour or two then she buggers off again to her "clubs" and friends... leaving my hubby to do her work too! She dictates everyone's salary and hubby's is pathetic compared to other companies - yet she gets DOUBLE his for doing nothing!
Hubby basically runs the show there and the company would have closed down if it were not for him. He has a very high work standard and has trained the other staff accordingly so the work / tools going out are top class. The latest batch of tooling is actually heading to China for production on BMW parts!
At the end of the day when you work for someone else you must know that they need you - not that you need them! When you resign, they will k@k themselves - just like when I resigned from my "typist" job - my boss freaked out! It took him nearly 2 years and I don't know how many people to try and get to the same level of work that I was producing, and he eventually gave up and employed three other people to do the work that I was getting through.
What goes around, comes around... if your boss treats you like dirt, then he will feel the "pain" when you quit / leave. Becoming my own boss was a very difficult step financially (I was retrenched 3 times in a row and we were scraping the bottom of the barrel when I had to buy stock to start off my then hobby - beads and suncatchers - read our success story on the blog). But I persevered, expanded my range of products until I found "what worked", and the rest is history!
Oud maar nie koud, heehee! (many of us here) and thank goodness for growing older. The perfect age to enjoy the fruits of our labour in a calm and serene manner without the stresses & emotional upheavals of youth. One thing I've noticed as well is that the older I get the more clearer solutions to problems become, and instead of the blind panic we used to feel, hubby and I now sit and set out a clear path to a solution, even if it takes a while.

Got the same situation here! I think it sometimes does not pay to work too hard, it tends to let the bosses overlook any promotions 'cos who else is going to get the job done. What happened with this last contract hubby is doing is an even bigger slap in the face - at the first meeting he attended the projects manager admitted in front of all the other managers that hubbys experience and qualifications far over-exceeds theirs. Worst is, after his first week, starting at the bottom, he was given his first independent job (because he proved himself within a few days) and his first teams to oversee - a job that has had so many problems he has managed to up production by over 800%. He is now in sole charge of a certain section, but still on the lowest bracket! If he passes the 2nd and final stage (Law - re his industry) of his studies he'll actually be higher qualified than the idiot in charge here.
But at last he'll be moving on to a job he is actually qualified for, white collar, clipboard-toting, as he so deserves. But I know him, soon he'll be in there getting his hands dirty ... luckily (before he becomes indispensible to the job he is doing) this time his contract includes a conditional promotion on the outcome of his examinations.

It's good when a company recognises your honest achievements, but terrible when they acknowledge what you're worth, but don't do something about it!
At my hubby's firm the youngsters are always complaining about their "low" wages (mind you R45+ per hour for entry level), but I came across a saying a while back that says it all:
You don't get paid for the hour. You get paid for the value you bring to the hour. ~ Jim Rohn 1930-2009 Business Philosopher, Author & Speaker
