Hubby is probably going to leave first, we are waiting for the contract to arrive, then off to the embassy for visa's, etc. I have to stay behind to settle up everything - we are keeping our house in JHB, I have already 3 girls living there (the college is but 1km away) - so the little R600 a month we charge them for a room each is less than what their parents have to spend on transport to the college and back.
I also have to arrange storage for our bakkie - does anyone know how to store a vehicle safely for a period of 6 years? should it be on jacks or something? should the oil and petrol be drained or left? If anyone has a clue pls help. I also have to make sure my girls are safe, so will have to arrange the security gates and windows.
I am sad at the thought of leaving my little business behind, but I will most definitely be looking at sending some goodies back, exploring the possibility of having an agent here, or if possible doing some sourcing if anyone is interested. I will probably only leave soonest 3 months time or maybe even early next year, depends on the arrangements, hubby will live in hotels for a few weeks while he visits the sites, and then a furnished apartment, including our very own interpreter at our beck and call, lol.
The job is on the high speed rails, the most advanced in the world - but on the tunnelling, construction and explosives part. Apparantly South African expertise is highly valued and all foreigners are treated with respect. I'm somewhat sceptical about the cuisinne, our friend (current project leader and once again boss to be) ended up eating grilled pig's ears. I hear that cats, dogs, rats and snake are a possibility as well.
I am really excited, but somewhat petrified as well. It's such a big change, I'm going to probably miss the birth of my first grandchild, and will really miss the kids.
On a lighter note - I told hubby the first thing anyone in the family is going to say when they get the news is to ask what we plan to do with our vehicle and furniture - and true as xxx, I was right. Despicable, is all I can say!

This is so exciting. Where in China? If the job is on the high speed rails does that mean you will be moving about once you are there?
All I know about storing a car is you must take the battery out.
And don't worry too much about the food. Stick to vegetarian pizza and McDonalds![]()
What wonderful news B&B. What excitement awaits you - are you going to start Chinese lessons before you go?
MrAerospace and I both send warmest congratulations to your hubby!

Hubby is going on consultancy basis, so we'll have a place of our own to settle in, but yes, he'll probably have to travel from time to time. I plan on totally immersing myself in the culture and most certainly going to try learn at least one of the many dialects they have there - will arrange lessons with the interpreter.
I am not sure about exporting from China so will have to visit the SA Embassy there to find out what to do. The advantage for buyers as I can see it is that I have my SA Bank account already in place which could make it easier for non-paypal/credit card users. But all this I still have to find out, source products, etc, etc. Maybe come to some agreement with a trade broker here. I don't plan on dropshipping however, the products will have to be stock on hand.
The town is called Panxian (also called Hongguo) close to the Myanmar (Tibet), Korean, Thailand borders so I am hoping to be able to visit these countries as well to source some of the lovely silver products they have.
I will update as we go along, and will most certainly pass on any information regarding products and import opportunities, or other legalities that may benefit some buyer.

I never realised what a difference this move would make to my hubby or how much his past work situation has been affecting him. The difference is almost physical, like the world has lifted from his shoulder - and all just because for the first time again in many years he's not going to have to yes, amen to bosses who are less quallified or experienced than he is.... the way we he has had to fight and claw his way to a position not even befitting his seniority has "broken" and tired him a bit.
I'm an avid patriot and have always scorned people wanting to throw in the towel here in SA - but realise now I was too hasty in my judgement of them. The next few years I am going to spend travelling China, but most of all "fixing" my darling tired hubby.
And so life begins at 50!

I agree... hubby & I chatted this weekend as to when he is going to tell his boss where exactly to go jump. We're heading to the Garden Route at the end of July to go house-hunting, and he will hopefully be working for me / with me from Jan next year! His BoB training starts this week!
When your man knows that things are going to be better, then his overall "mood" improves considerably... less stress...
aahhh, now i know where i've been going wrong with dimitri, i have been doing all the wrong things.......this is what i shall now try to keep my man happy & satisfied
PS: Congrats B&B
