I use Facebook as 'escape therapy'; playing one game and one game only...perhaps an hour a day.

Methinks Facebook (for the most part) is little more than a Dear Abby / National Inquirer 'rag'. If one is having 'trouble' with a spouse/child/teen/co-worker/boss/teacher/classmate, perhaps it is time to get off the computer and have a little 'face-to-face time' and talk / listen to one another. And, if a kid doesn't have a circle of 'parent approved' friends from the neighborhood, school and/or church, and has friends only on a social site, then there IS a problem...with the kid or in the home. A social community, like Facebook, isn't going to 'fix' that.

My four older kids have 'flown the coop' and only one remains at home. He has little use for Facebook except to keep in contact with a boyhood friend who resides 2300 miles away...perhaps a couple of times a month.

IF I had a younger child at home, there is NO WAY he/she would be 'running the streets' of Facebook/My Space or anywhere else without proper supervision. We all have locks on our doors and windows for a reason: to keep the 'bad guy' out. We should take the same precautions on social sites to keep the 'bad guy' out.

Unfortunately, some parents spend more time housebreaking the new pup than monitoring their children's activities; online and off.

    Just MHO.

Ruthie, here in SA there are far too many people who leave their kids to their own devices and many people whom one would expect to know better just leave their poor dogs locked in a tiny yard, yapping their heads off all day (and occasionally at night). Neighbours of ours have a Great Dane which is kept locked in a small front yard which is concreted and paved and then go off for a whole week-end with someone coming in once a day to put food down! Other neighbours down the road are happy to let their little 4 year old son play in the gutter in front of their house most of the day, running into the road in front of cars. It's a strange, strange world we live in today.

Admin watches us, Mari! You'd better believe it. Nothing we say here is "sacred".

Ah, lily...not that much different in this corner of the flat map.

Maybe I am just 'over-the-hill-'round-the-bend', but my kids were not 'growed up' the way some kids are today. I believe in the "3-B's"....if there is enough of an impact on the 'buttocks' that it registers in the 'brain', there will be a change in 'behavior'. I didn't have to 'whomp' on my kids very often; usually the 'look' was enough to stop them dead in their tracks, but if I did take the Mama 'board of education' to their 'seat of understanding', they didn't do 'whatever' a second time; 'brain adjustment'.

Methinks perhaps that should also apply to some parents and 'pet parents' (what pet owners are called here)... drawers dropped in the middle of the town square in front of G O D and everyone. Brain adjustment.

In the more 'Progressive' aka 'Left-Leaning Liberal' States, it is a no-no, too; "child abuse". Here in the South, it is allowed (as long as on the tush)....even in the classroom.

I can remember (long trip down Memory Lane) my oldest son, when he was nine or ten, telling me he was calling CPS (Children's Protective Services) after he'd had a paddling. I wrote down the number, handed him the phone and told him it would take them about an hour to get to the house; he might want to have them come to the hospital instead 'cause that is where he would be....and that I would be out of jail before he was released from the hospital and that he would have a 'repeat' waiting for him after I picked him up and brought him home.

He didn't make the call. He did go to his room and slammed his door shut.

    Guess it 'registered'.
