    Unhappy I died today ...

I died today. You got tired of me and took me to the shelter. They were overcrowded and I drew an unlucky number. I am in a black plastic bag in a landfill now. Some other puppy will get the barely used leash you left. My collar was dirty and too small, but the lady took it off before she sent me to the Rainbow Bridge . Would I still be at home if I hadn’t chewed your shoe? I didn’t know what it was, but it was leather, and it was on the floor. I was just playing. You forgot to get puppy toys. Would I still be at home if I had been housebroken? Rubbing my nose in what I did only made me ashamed that I had to go at all. There are books and obedience teachers that would have taught you how to teach me to go to the door. Would I still be at home if I hadn’t brought fleas into the house? Without anti-flea medicine, I couldn’t get them off of me after you left me in the yard for days. Would I still be at home if I hadn’t barked? I was only saying, “I’m scared, I’m lonely, I’m here, I’m here! I want to be your best friend.” Would I still be at home if I had made you happy? Hitting me didn’t make me learn how. Would I still be at home if you had taken the time to care for me and to teach manners to me? You didn’t pay attention to me after the first week or so, but I spent all my time waiting for you to love me. I died today. Love, Your Puppy who tried so hard to love you.

How many folks do this - I guess you must have seen so many at the SPCA?

It is so completely MIND-BLOWING that people do not take the time to weather all the bits that go with training and loving young animals (human and furry) - but simply dump them and/or abuse them.

    Now I feel THOROUGHLY depressed!

Oh no... It's so true and so sad - wish I could stick my head in the sand but unfortunately I can't. I still remember going to feed the donkeys at the Animal Welfare when a person brought in a lovely Dalmatian - she was 5 years old and they were getting rid of her because she didn't like their new puppy. Can you flipping believe it???
I hope karma followed those people around doggedly.
She did get a nice home, eventually - but I'll never EVER forget the look on that dog's face when they left her behind...

I'm sure Karma came to bite them in the bum properly, don't worry. I am still amazed that I managed to get 2 pedigree rescue dogs. Little Stud Muffin is truly the light of my life. EVERY single evening my husband & I laugh our butts off at him, he's just the craziest dog with the funniest characteristics. Can't imagine life without him

Happily I have 2 wonderful loving Daschies which I rescued from the SPCA, my other 2 are Father and son. The 2 I adopted are the most adorable, playful angels one could ever hope to have as part of a family. I get tremedous joy from my Daschies, they are always happy to see me and always give me love and attention, unlike other members of my immediate family.
I won't be getting a dog from a breeder or newspaper ever again, there are too many loving animals waiting to be adopted at the SPCA.

I wish that every single person who is thinking of taking on a puppy/kitten would, firstly, be given this letter to read - preferably asked to learn it by heart and repeat it to the person from whom he/she is acquiring the puppy/kitten!

Whenever I hear a mother saying that she just wants her dog/cat to have "just one" litter so her son/daughter can witness the birth process, I ask her if she will also please consider taking that child to witness the number of animals being euthanased each week at the local animal welfare shelters because they don't have homes! When asked why I say this, I repeat: "Birthing is a natural process, so is dying - so let your child know the full story".

I worked as a stud manager for many years in the thoroughbred industry and eventually couldn't take it anymore. Our stud had over a hundred foals born every year and I drove myself crazy trying to keep track of all of them through their racing careers so that after I could try ensure a good home. An impossible feat. Couldn't stand it - we breed for a short-lived racing career in huge numbers. So many horses, so few good homes - totally irresponsible industry.
So indiscriminate and prolific breeding really %^^%# me off. Totally.

The cruelest story I have heard some adopted a dog from the SPCA.Two weeks later they brought him back the story was he was to rough with the cats. A friend of mine recently adopted him this poor dog just does not leave her side for a split second. I thought that was so cruel that I was crying for most of the day.Extremely sad today stayed busy though with forms and items to be filled etc.

Oh Lily, Reading this, makes one just want to go and hug each of our pets in turn. So very sad, and sure to bring tears to the eyes of each and every animal lover, and maybe, just maybe, the "heartless" ones as well?

Meeks, you are so right about wanting to go and hug each of our pets in turn.

Our old dog, Jenny, cross-lab and german shepherd, is aging fast and I don't think we have too much time left together. Both hubby and I were in tears this morning as she didn't want to eat her breakfast for the third day in a row. (We did get her to eat a little bit later in the day yesterday and the day before). She doesn't seem to be suffering in any way, but we know her time with us is going to be short.

Oh oh - lots of love to you guys and to Jenny. The realisation that time is getting short is very very hard... So many of us on the forum have had such animal-sadness lately. Except Duke - who had no idea whatsoever about the hilarity his strange appetite caused...
