Default State pension? What a joke!

I injured my back at work in Dec 2009, I couldn't do the job I was doing because of this. I was sort of "forced" to resign because of this and was told the pension fund would be paying me 2/3 of my salary until I am 65. I received my last payment today, (I turn 65 on 2nd Feb, send the cake!). I have paid tax and uif since I started working since I was 17 years old and never claimed a cent. I applied for a state pension which has been approved. but to my dismay, it is R1140 a month. Even the most humble person living in a rent free tin shack could not survive on this! Welcome to the new South Africa!!

I know, it's absurd. Didn't you know how little it is? Must be an awful shock to find out now. I'm sorry...

Staccato, but they was supposed to "board"you! It was a IOD (injury on duty). They were also supposed to pay you a lump sum!

I think, Miems, that "boarding" only lasts until one's retirement date and then it's on to pension. If staccato didn't have a pension fund (or the pension is too low) then he would be eligible for the Old Age Pension which, as mentioned above, is peanuts and I, too, don't have a clue how any "older" person is supposed to live on it!

The SA government is far too negligent when it comes to senior citizens - they keep interest rates as low as possible to help all those with debt, but the older folk who have saved all their lives have to suffer. SA Banks are also negligent with senior citizens as although they do offer free banking, one is only allowed a limited amount of transactions and then one has to pay!

This country needs to get its act together as far as older folk are concerned!

Now, staccato - for your birthday on Thursday, you are invited to supper with us! Let us know if you can make it!!

Thats a pity staccato. You injured your back while you were AT your work. In the mines you are covered even if you are on your way to or from work. For instance if you get into a car accident!
Yours must have been a freak accident then?
