Do not exceed the following size for avatars:

The maximum size of your custom image is 80 by 80 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller).

This allows more posting space without having to scroll across the screen to read the full post. This is very true for computers with smaller screens such as laptops/notebooks.
