This "coin" has been discussed on the NGC Message Boards once before. The only thing that makes it a 'coin" is that it is legal tender. In reality, it is a gimmick and the buyer would have been better off buying an equivalent amount of bullion for less.
I believe it cointained gold content of $1MM USD or CAD when struck. I do not recall what the gold price was at that time.
If anyone here wants to know what a real gold coin of impressive size looks like, take a look at the Spain 100 gold escudos in one of the Aurellio and Calico auctions from last year. There are two listed in that sale that were struck as presentation pieces. The coins weigh about 12 ounces I believe.
