  • The Crafts Section is Being Stitched, Glittered & Glued

    Hi Everyone,

We're making some structural changes to the Crafts section on bidorbuy. We've moved some categories around, added some new ones and re-named a couple to create a more encompassing and extensive Crafts category.

You can see the category here.
We're very excited to bring you a fuller and more exciting Crafts section, so have a look!:)

    Hi

From a bead seller's point of view, the new change for the bead section is terrible!!!

When the change was brought about a long while ago, we fought tooth and nail just to get those sub-categories, now it's changed again.

With so many thousands of items listed, it is far easier and more practical for multiple subsections - almost like the Gemstone category. Currently, under Glass Beads alone there are over 32 pages to go through, and findings has 31 pages without being split! An absolute nightmare and I would give up after page 5 already!

I suggest (and am opening this to suggestions from other bead buyers and sellers):

Findings (all the small bits and pieces - crimps, jumprings, clasps, etc)
Tools & Threads (all tools, tigertail, elastic, etc)
Natural beads (seeds, wood, pearls, shell, etc)
    Glass beads (normal, Indian, etc)
Swarovski beads (all sorts including pendants)
    Vintage beads
Metal beads (charms and metal spacers could fall into this category being metal products)
Other beads (pandora, etc - not the regular beads but specialised)
Accessories (everything that does not have a specific category)
    Kits (for the "mixed" selection)
    Charms & watch faces
Packaging & display (packets, display items, etc)

The above list is a real minimum as the list can be endless (just look at the supplier websites for a rough idea and you'll run out of space!).

It will make things so much easier and more practical for buyers as currently they have to sift through stacks of listings, which in turn drops the income as some buyer's just don't have the time to "browse" (or search)!

Your kind consideration would be most sincerely appreciated!

From a concerned bead seller & buyer,

The Crafts Category is still being Stitched, Glittered and Glued!

            Hi Everyone,

As I said, this section is still under construction.

The new subcategories are actually very similar to the suggestion given by Cali Crafts & Gems. In fact, I think they are actually even more detailed.

It may be that these new sections are not showing up on the main page just yet because there are no current listings in them.

Due to the move around, your current listings (if for example you listed a beading crimp) will remain in the category to which you allocated it initially (e.g. Beading & Jewellery - Findings) and not automatically move to the new, more specific category (e.g. Beading & Jewellery - Findings- Crimps & End Beads).

We've turned Needle Crafts into a new main parent category under crafts so that we could add things like embroidery, cross-stiching etc. Have a look for it there.

Please note that newly created subcategories will not show up on the Crafts Main page if there are no listings in them.

So, crafts sellers, take advantage of the new sections and fill them up!

              Hi

Now that I've gone in to edit the listings do I see all the "new" sub-categories - great!

Only problem is that I've got 900+ listings to edit... there goes my weekend!

PS. Just four sub-category suggestions so far:

                Findings - Headpins & Eyepins
                Beads - Metal beads
                Watch faces & bookmarks
Beads - Acrylic & lucite beads (this will include novelty beads which there are stacks of currently clogging up "other beads"!)

Under Cord, Thread & Wire, could this please change to: Chain, Cord, Thread & Wire

Under Boards & Trays, could this please change to: Boards, Mats & Trays

Also, Swarovski beads, could this be split? Bicone beads, round beads, hearts, pendants, other shapes. Would help a lot! Thanks.

PLEASE just do change the wording of this category from Swarovski beads to Crystal beads > Although Swarovski is a good quality crystal it is more like a household brand name in crystal but, do not limit crystal beads to be the only good quality crystal cut bead available. To exclude other crystal beads from such a category is the same as to say Adidas can be listed under brand name shoes but Nike should be listed under standard ordinary shoes.
Swarovski is just the name of the company manufacturing/cutting the crystal Swarovski AG of Wattens in Austria and not a crystal that is better or more valuable as other crystals

Sungems is perfectly correct. Crystal beads would be the best way to word the entire category.

As a bead seller I tend to disagree with the "renaming" of Swarovski beads as there ARE cheap imitations of Swarovski which could easily fall into the "crystal beads" category and there will be many unhappy / angered buyers! All other crystal beads would fall under 'Glass beads'.

In order of "value" or quality:
                        Swarovski
                        Preciosa
                        Fire-polished

Swarovski should therefore be left in a category totally of it's own - there is simply NO comparison!

WE agree Swarovski is good quality but you do get other crystal that is just the same or even better

And the call / support for the non-Swarovski category is from sellers who do NOT trade in Swarovski products!

We go to great lengths to get the GENUINE product in and do NOT mislead our buyers!

Stating that the genuine product is the same as the cheap imitation product is like stating that horrible processed cheese falls into the same quality grade as the 6 month+ matured top grade cheddar!

                            There is simply NO comparison!

To enforce my belief or standards, I invite you to go browse any of the top bead suppliers - locally and internationally. Every single one lists the imitations SEPERATELY from the Swarovski!

PS. Cali Craft is known as the only supplier in SA with the largest colour spectrum of Swarovski bicone beads - thus beating even the top retailers (and suppliers)! I get my Swarovski's directly from overseas thus ensuring I offer the 100% GENUINE product!

Hi Cali. I am NOT a trader in beads, just a buyer, so my call for Swavrovski not to be a special item has no ill-intentions, I promise. My feeling is that, yes, there are other crystal beads which equal the Swavrovski ones. And, if one specifically wants Swavrovski beads, one can just call them up in the "find" window and all ads with Swavrovski in them will come up for buyers. If BoB offer a special section for Swavrovski then they will have to do the same for "Pandora", et al, if there is to be fairness and this will make the bead section very "heavy".
