  • Top Stones/Collectors Stones - Pick of the week

I'm starting this thread for listings to be posted of the top stones and top collectors stones listed every week. We can go over the pros and cons and discuss the various selections. This will hopefully create buyer awareness and encourage sellers to list more of these top quality gems.

Please not that any listings are not endorsements of the listings as they are based on the information provided in the listings only

    This week's pick

    Natural Sun-O-Lite (Bloody Iolite) Round - 2.81cts! – GemZone
    http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/I...radeId=4038073

Really unusual colour. Too rare to be appreciated by many so should be a good buy. Sunstones (labradorite and Andesine) with shiller have also seen a surge in popularity due greatly to Jewellery TC channels in the States making it better known (often with over the top claims). Very collectable. Hardness not ideal for any heavy wearing jewellery e.g. rings.

CONCAVE ROUND BYTOWNITE - Gem Shop
    http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/I...radeId=4149335

Unusual cut. Great colour for this stone. Rare. Great collectors specimen. Hardness not ideal for any heavy wearing jewellery e.g. rings.

CERTIFIED RHODOCHROSITE (0.96Ct) - Just Jewels
    http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/I...radeId=4064432

Very soft/brittle so not suitable for jewellery. Great collectors specimen. Bargain starting bid. Great colour. Difficult to cut as it has 3 cleavage directions. Colorado state mineral. Although fairly common, large red crystal are rare and highly sought after.

ULTRA BRILLIANT VIVID GOLDEN YELLOW HELIODOR – baya1
    http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/I...radeId=4077436

Yellow Beryl. Not as valuable as emerald (Medium to heavy green beryl) but beautiful and a good addition to any collection. Suitable for jewellery and available at affordable prices. This stone has good colours. Pale shades are often heated to become (the better known blue beryl) aquamarine.

.92ct INTENSE DEEP BLUE TOURMALINE - SA GEM IMPORT CO
    http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/I...radeId=4043953

Deep blue Elbaite (tourmaline). Rare colour. Very collectable. Most valuable after new new favourite, Neon Paraiba. More valuable than rubelite tourmaline.

      Hi Luke

Maybe you could specify why each one is a good buy, is it value, colour, size or a combination of them this way we can hopefully learn a bit too

I guess what is a possitive sign for BOB is the fact that its a mixture of sellers, which is good for us as it shows that everyone is trying to offer good merchandise

                    Hi Luke
Thanks so much for this, very informative and useful.

Can you suggest a good gem course to attend in the Jhb area ? Not only diamonds, I want to learn a bit more about coloured stones.

                    Would appreciate your help.

Send me a PM for information on courses.
I will go through the stones shotly and put together a list for this week.

PS. I see all the above stones are still available for really good prices except for one that is closed without being sold. Could be a few bargains for anyone who gets them befoer they close...

                            Here's a cool cabochon:

                            Quartz with Tourmaline inclusions
                            http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/I...radeId=4086698

Nice for a collector and schorl (black tourmaline) really allows one to see the crystal structure.

                            and from the same seller:

Rutile Quartz with Golden & Black needles
                            http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/I...radeId=4177150

Every collector should have a few rutile included specimens. They make great patterns in faceted gems.

And here is one amazing looking ametrine!!! from AAA+GEMS

                            49.11ct NATURAL AMETRINE
                            http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/I...radeId=4228543

                              Something special

                              RARE COLLECTORS PETALITE (2.11 Ct)

                              http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/I...radeId=4183005

Rare enough to impress and hard enough to wear!

Great to collect. Should go for a very good price.

Petalite was named after the Greek word for "leaf" as it has perfect cleavage like the veins and junctions in a leaf. Petalite crystals are rare and occur mostly as coarse aggregates. Petalite ranks 6 to 6.5 on Mohs' scale. It will work well in necklaces, but is too brittle for rings.
