  • Groot Constantia Stamp

    Hi all,

I came across this 2 1/2c groot constantia stamp (on the left) in a lot I bought a while back. The one on the right is the normal violet colour you would expect.

Is this blued stamp a known variety or is my assessment correct that it has been poorly removed from paper. The cancel marks are very clear so I felt that if any chemicals had been used, these would have been smudged etc.

    Any ideas.

    Regards

    Hi Donovink

This is not a listed variety as such. The first definatives of the Republic of South Africa had many printings between 1961 and 1974. One of the causes of colour variation is also exposure to sunlight amongst others. What also affects the colour is the coating used on the paper, type of printing, etc. Hope this answers your question.
